Pence, reiterating that the US remained committed to Nato, attempted to soothe concerns that Trump might deal directly with Putin, bypassing western Europe. The audience welcomed his promise that Russia will be held “accountable” for its actions in Ukraine, although he didn’t spell out how.

But he lost them when he went further than US defence secretary James Mattis at Nato headquarters last week in rebuking Nato members such as Germany, France and Italy for failing to pay a fair share of its financial burden.

It also has critical infrastructure that is failing thanks to decades of neglect as funding has been diverted to social programs, 119 miles of track for a bullet train to nowhere that took 8 years to lay, a $443 billion dollar debt and the highest income and sales tax rates in the country.
Those figures may help explain why California will no longer have Nestle USA, as a corporate presence when the $26-billion-a-year food giant moves its headquarters from the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale to Rosslyn, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.
The move is taking 1,200 Nestle employees, California taxpayers with it.
Nestle is just one of dozens of businesses making the decision to leave the highly taxed and over-regulated state for more business-friendly states like Missouri, Ohio and Virginia.
For its own part, the powers that be in Glendale profess to be unconcerned by the loss of Nestle USA, its business and its employees.
“We just completed a study two weeks ago, which shows that we have more than 1,000 businesses in Glendale that are tech-focused. We’d like to see some more co-working space that would cater to this burgeoning technology industry that has organically grown here,” said Darlene Sanchez, the city’s deputy director of community development.
Nestle joins other companies fleeing from California – a state that launched a secession movement in November following the election of Donald Trump.
Toyota moved its U.S. headquarters and thousands of employees from another Los Angeles suburb, Torrance, to Dallas, and Occidental Petroleum relocated its corporate head offices to Houston, but many other, smaller companies are doing the same without making the splash in the news larger relocations do.
According to business relocation expert Joseph Vranich, at least 1,687 California companies moved out of state during the Obama years, 2008 through 2015, although the actual number may be as high as 10,000 because the ratio of companies leaving is five to each relocation reported in the press.

After a month in office, Donald Trump has already proved himself unable to discharge his duties. The disability isn’t laziness or inattention. It expresses itself in paranoid rants, non-stop feuds carried out in public, and impulsive acts that can only damage his government and himself. Last week, at a White House press conference, the President behaved like the unhinged leader of an unstable and barely democratic republic. He rambled for nearly an hour and a half, on script and off; he flung insults at reporters; he announced that he was having fun; and he congratulated himself so many times and in such preposterous terms (“this Administration is running like a fine-tuned machine”) that the White House press corps could only stare in amazement. Trump experienced such a deep need to get back on top by lashing out that he apparently overrode the objections of his advisers, felt much better afterward, then prepared to go to Florida to sustain his high at the first rally of his reëlection campaign.

While the White House isolates itself in power struggles, the Administration is in nearly open revolt. Career diplomats are signing statements of dissent or leaving the State Department, while key posts remain unfilled. Officials at the Environmental Protection Agency fought to stop Scott Pruitt, Trump’s pro-industry nominee, from taking over as their new boss. And other government officials, after weeks of hearing Trump belittle their agencies, are feeding the press information about Russian involvement with his campaign.

Foreign leaders, depending on their orientation, are watching this spectacle with disbelieving alarm or with calculating interest. Allies such as Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau, of Canada, and Shinzo Abe, of Japan, flatter the President in order to avoid the fate of Australia’s Malcolm Turnbull, whom Trump first berated and then hung up on during their get-to-know-you phone call. Vladimir Putin is already testing Trump, by sending Russian fighter jets to buzz a U.S. Navy ship. Xi Jinping is positioning China to fill the void in the Pacific Rim which will be left by Trump’s policy of America First. Pragmatists in Iran are trying to judge whether the new American government can be counted on to act rationally—exactly what U.S. officials always wondered about the fractured leadership of the Islamic Republic.

It won’t get better. The notion that, at some point, Trump would start behaving “Presidential” was always a fantasy that has the truth backward: the pressure of the Presidency is making him worse. He’s insulated by sycophants and by family members, and he can still ride a long way on his popular following. Though the surge of civic opposition, the independence of the courts, and the reinvigoration of the press are heartening, the only real leverage over Trump lies in the hands of Republicans.
