Harper ‘confident’ of election victory

SAULT STE. MARIE—Stephen Harper says he’s going to win the election and he’s laid out four “immediate” priorities for a Conservative government that include help for seniors, passing a package of crime bills and protecting health care.

“I’m confident we’re going to win this election. I’m optimistic. Obviously the decision comes down to Canadian voters,” Harper said at a campaign stop here Monday.

“We’re making a pitch that we need a strong, stable majority government to move us forward,” he said.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, a relaxed-looking Harper said his government would “hit the ground running” and bring Parliament back this spring to implement the budget that was defeated in March.

“We will have a session this spring to complete the vital business that is sitting before Parliament right now. The government will continue its business beginning Tuesday,” he said.

Harper laid out the “four national priorities” for his government in the early weeks and months:

• passing the budget that was defeated in March;

• boosting the guaranteed income supplement to help “most vulnerable” seniors and amending the criminal code to crack down on elder abuse;

• stable funding for health care system “to protect Canada’s system of universal public healthcare”;

• bundle outstanding crime bills into an omnibus bill for passage within 100 days of Parliament’s return. This would include measures to end house arrest and eliminate pardons for “serious” criminals and crack down on organized drug crime.

“These are achievable, affordable measures … Our priorities are the priorities of Canadians. Perhaps most importantly they’re based on the track record of a government which is leading Canada out of the global recession,” Harper said.

“We differ fundamentally from the agenda of the opposition parties, which is no focus on the economy and job creation, unaffordable promises financed by higher taxes, a record of cutting health care funding and an approach to crime that is consistently soft on crime,” he said.

And he pushed back against Liberals attacks that a Conservative government would lack the money to ensure stable funding of healthcare.

“There is no spending priority of government that is more critical than this,” Harper said, noting that his party has pledged to boost funding to provinces by six per cent a year for health care.

“This is an unshakeable commitment,” Harper said. “Canadians…rely on governments to keep that health care system strong and that is what we will do.”

Идея понятна, консерваторы не могут сделать то, что сделали либералы в 90-х. Но как бы не крутились, Игнатиев настолько серый, что может потерять даже статут официального лидера оппозиции. Социалисты уже выровнялись с либералами.

А я не агитирую за Игнатьева. Я просто считаю что, как часто происходит в этой стране, выбор в Канаде тоже не очень хороший.
С США сравнивать трудно - здесь значительно больший бардак чем в Канаде. По крайней мере Канада не суётся в безконечные войны. США уже воюют в 3х странах. И это при том что страна фактически банкрот.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to announce the Canadian wedding gifts for His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton:

“I am pleased to announce the Government of Canada will make a donation to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary in honour of the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton. The Government of Canada will offer this wedding gift on behalf of all Canadians.

“The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary was chosen by Prince William and Miss Middleton to be the Canadian beneficiary of a special charitable fund that was set up to celebrate their wedding. The donation of $50,000 by the Government of Canada will allow the organization’s volunteers to carry out their mission, which is to offer—day and night—a permanent search and rescue program to meet the needs of Canada’s marine services, as well as to prevent injuries or loss of human life at sea. Through its search and rescue and nautical safety programs, this not-for-profit organization assists the Coast Guard and the Department of National Defence.

“Canada is proud to offer a wedding gift to a family member of our Head of State, Her Majesty The Queen. This gift was chosen specifically for the occasion and represents Canadians and the pride they have in their country.

“The selection of this worthy cause is symbolic of Canada’s affection for the Royal couple. Canadians are eager to welcome the Royal couple to Canada for their first Royal Tour as newlyweds and share the best of our great land.”

The Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper have also arranged for a personal gift of outdoor equipment for use when the Royal couple experience Canada's natural splendour later this year.

From June 30 to July 8, 2011, the newlyweds will undertake a Royal Tour of Canada, their first visit outside the United Kingdom as a married couple. They will visit Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and the National Capital Region. A detailed itinerary will be released at a later date.
